All eyes on Dolphins’ new signings this season

2010-09-13 00:00

WEATHER permitting, the Dolphins will hopefully get in a solid four days out in the middle when they meet the Cape Cobras in a friendly at the Maritzburg Oval from today until Thursday.

There is always a fresh look about the players and a spring in their step as all the pre-season training begins to unfold into the actual business on the pitch.

For the spectator, too, there is the opportunity to reacquaint oneself with some of the stars as well as take a good look at the up-and-coming talent signed by the franchise.

This week sees the fine-tuning take place before the season begins in earnest, and with players still jockeying for position in the starting XI there should be no shortage of endeavour and serious cricket, “friendly” or not.

One new talent definitely worth watching is Devon Conway, the classy young batsman from Johannesburg who made a big name for himself at schoolboy level and impressed mightily with a superb hundred for Gauteng against KZN Inland at the PMB Oval last season.

New signing Conway has been playing club cricket in England and has clearly impressed Dolphins coach Graham Ford sufficiently to warrant a contract.

Berea Rovers quick bowler Byron Whatmore is the other player who will be making his first outing in a Dolphins team, while much is expected of the talented St Charles and KZN Inland batsman Bradley Moses this season.

Glenn Addicott is not playing, but it’s more a case of Ford wanting to have a look at other players as well, while left-arm pace bowler Mthokozisi Shezi is back from injury and intent on consolidating on his recording the best single-innings SuperSport Series bowling figures late last season.

Another one to watch with keen interest is young Dolphins middle-order batsman David Miller, who was with the South Africa A team during their productive tour of Sri Lanka.

The hard-hitting Miller is one of his straight-driven sixes away from the scene of many of his schoolboy exploits on Goldstones at Maritzburg College and hopefully some of the boys at his alma mater will be making the short trip to watch a class act in action.

Oh yes, there is also a chap called Hashim Amla playing.

Dolphins XI: Imraan Khan (capt), Loots Bosman, Hashim Amla, Ahmed Amla, David Miller, Bradley Moses, Devon Conway, Daryn Smit, Kyle Abbott, Byron Whatmore, Mthokozisi Shezi, Keshav Maharaj.
