All ready for Capital Climb race

2013-08-17 00:00

THE Capital Climb organisers are confident that they will have a big turnout for this morning’s race.

The race, which has been an annual event on the Pietermaritzburg calendar since 1976, will begin at 8 am at Voortrekker high school. The finish will also be at the school.

Organiser Tony Morrison told Weekend Witness that the race was a big event in Maritzburg.

“It’s always been well supported,” he said.

One former winner of the race is Comrades Marathon legend, the iconic Bruce Fordyce.

“He used to run it. He was a regular here back in the day,” he said, adding that they usually did attract well-known names, but they did not know who would be running until the morning of the race.

Registration begins at 6 am, and it costs R60 to enter the 15 km race, plus R15 for a temporary running licence. The fee to enter the five-kilometre race will be R40.

The race will begin at the school, and will head up Roberts Road and turn into Taunton Road where it will make its way to World’s View.

From there, it will head down Old Howick Road and end back at the school, said Morrison.

He said municipal traffic officers and police would be out to ensure that the runners are safe.

Morrison said he expected between 1 500 and 2 000 people to enter the race.
