All the right distinctions to top off a great love story

2015-01-06 00:00

THE high school sweethearts of a top La Lucia school, who each scored multiple distinctions, never let the marks get between them.

Tyla Mitchison and Matthew Muller from Crawford College La Lucia, earned eight distinctions each but say they never talk about schoolwork.

Matthew said there is much more to a relationship than comparing marks.

“When we first started dating nearly 18 months ago most people jumped to the conclusion that we would compare,” said Matthew.

Tyla said they seldom ever talked about the exams.

“I don’t like to discuss a paper beforehand in order to keep my focus and Matthew doesn’t like to discuss it afterwards,” she said.

Both youngsters will be off to Gauteng this year, with Tyla studying Veterinary Science at Pretoria University and Matthew a degree in BEngSc Digital Art at Wits University — or simply a gaming degree.

Tyla said she hopes to specialise in large animals such as horses or wild game.

“What motivated me to achieve was simple — I knew how hard it was to get into the course I want. There is a limited intake and it is as hard if not harder than medicine.”

Matthew said he had been a “gamer since he was in Grade 3” and hoped to contribute to South Africa’s infant gaming industry.

“When I heard Wits had the course I looked into it. They only have an intake of about 30 people”.

The couple believe they will make their relationship work as they both head into their new tertiary lives.

“We will not be far from each other and will make the time and use the Gautrain to travel between the two cities,” said Tyla.
