Alleged burglars caught fleeing through ceiling

2013-07-29 00:00

THREE alleged teenage burglars ran out of luck when the owner of the flat they were busy ransacking returned to her flat unexpectedly at Gemsbok flats in Manor on Friday.

Thabile Mchunu said she had a funny feeling before she opened the door to her flat and was surprised to find intruders in the act of burgling her home.

“As I entered the flat I could tell something was not right and there it was — a teenager was inside my flat trying to flee through the ceiling board.”

Mchunu said she could hear them running overhead towards another flat.

“I was shocked because I had installed burglar guards and changed all the keys as my flat was broken into before. So I thought someone might have keys to my flat,” she said, adding that the intruders could have gained access through the ceiling from another flat in the block.

She said she dialled 10111 and within five minutes police came to her rescue. “Police got into the ceiling with a K9 police dog and the suspects were then easily apprehended.”

She said she was grateful for the police’s quick response.

Lieutenant Jack Haskins from the K9 unit said the quick response from the K9 handlers led to the arrests of the three suspects.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.
