Alleged dealer comes home to find house in flames

2008-11-20 00:00

A HOUSE that belongs to Pietermaritzburg drug dealing accused Joyce Komane was extensively damaged by fire last night.

Komane is facing drug charges together with Ramjini Chetty and four other accused.

She watched in shock as Msunduzi Municipality fire fighters battled the flames, which destroyed her kitchen and sitting room, leaving two bedrooms unscathed at 15 Huntley Road in Bisley.

Komane arrived home at about 8 pm to find fire fighters had almost extinguished the fire that started at about 7 pm.

Komane said she and her boyfriend left for town in the morning. There no one else is living in the house.

“I left everything switched off when I left for town this morning at about 9 am. This has a human hand and I strongly suspect the Scorpions. These people have been harassing me all these years,” said Komane.

Komane’s house was raided by the Scorpions, sheriff of the court and the Asset Forfeiture Unit in June this year. Most of her belongings, including expensive furniture, were forfeited as a result of the charges she faces.

Komane and her co-accused are facing charges of racketeering, money laundering and dealing in drugs. Their case has been postponed until next year.

A neighbour, Anton Schoeman, said he noticed the fire in Komane’s house at about 7 pm when he returned from the shops.

“I got into my house, but the smell of a burning plastic continued. I went outside to investigate and I saw smoke from the house. I phoned the fire brigade and then the police,” said Schoeman.

While some neighbours expressed sympathy for Komane, one neighbour was heard saying that the fire fighters should have let the house continue burning.

The municipality’s fire investigator said he could not speculate on the cause last night.
