Alleged killer cop denied legal aid

2014-02-14 00:00

THE kwaDukuza SAPS lieutenant accused of murdering two of his colleagues appeared in court yesterday and was denied legal aid.

Lieutenant-Colonel Thulamuza Mokoena (53) is being given time to seek his own legal representation.

Mokoena appeared in the kwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court for a second time yesterday and his case was adjourned to Thursday, February 27.

Student constable Thobani Xulu (25) and constable Sbusiso Mthethwa (31) were shot in their heads as they sat in a police vehicle.

It had been reported that Mokoena, Xulu, Mthethwa and a fourth officer stopped along the R74 to investigate a suspicious red vehicle in the early hours of Saturday morning, February 1.

Mokoena was arrested on Monday, February 3.

Speaking after the matter was adjourned, Xulu’s father Colonel Bongani Xulu, a station commander in Nkandla, said his family is distraught.

“My son had three small children, one a five-month-old baby; how are they supposed to live without their dad? This should not have happened. I am angry, my son was a good boy and was going to make a good policeman.

“We cannot accept this. It is so painful. The other day I went outside my house and called out for my son to park our vehicles like I always did. I didn’t realise that he is gone until my wife came out and asked me why I was calling out for him.”

Xulu said when he went to the scene of the shooting he could not believe what had happened.

“It was not the first time I had seen a scene like that. It was the worst moment of my life.”

Mokoena, who was escorted out of the court by police, was given a brief moment to talk with members of his family before being remanded in custody.
