Alleged rhino poacher wounded, arrested after shoot-out

EZEMVELO KZN Wildlife field rangers wounded and arrested a suspected rhino poacher inside Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park on Sunday.

Rangers also recovered a set of rhino horns, a bag, a torch and an axe during the encounter, during which two other suspected poachers escaped.

The freshly killed carcass of a white rhino was found yesterday morning.

EKZNW spokesperson Musa Mntambo said the arrested suspect is from Mozambique.

Mntambo said two gunshots were heard coming from Nqumeni, next to the kwaSithole fence line in the game reserve, late on Sunday afternoon.

Rangers were immediately deployed to search the area and were posted at all possible exit routes.

At about 5.45 pm a shoot-out erupted between three suspects and field rangers, during the course of which the suspect was injured, and subsequently arrested. The other suspects fled.

Ezemvelo CEO Bandile Mkhize said he was concerned about an increase in the number of shooting incidents involving poachers recently.

“Poachers are always ready to shoot to kill our field rangers,” he said.
