‘Allow pupils to write exams’

2012-10-05 00:00

NO pupil should be prohibited from writing an exam.

That’s according to the KZN Education Department, which said it has been informed that some school principals are preventing pupils from writing exams because they do not conform to certain school policies.

Department spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said some of the reasons principals put forward for prohibiting pupils from sitting for exams include pregnancy, dressing in a way that does not conform to the school’s code of conduct and having a hairstyle that does not form part of the dress code.

He said pupil’s results were also being withheld by school principals because of non-payment of school fees.

“In terms of the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996, all learners have a right to education; however, learners’ rights are not absolute. Any conduct by a learner that will not compromise the integrity of the examination, must be treated sensitively, especially during the commencement of an examination,” Mlotshwa added.

He insisted that pupils must be allowed to write exams, but can be disciplined after the exams are over.

“Any disruptive behaviour that may adversely compromise the integrity of the examination will warrant immediate disciplinary action to be taken against such learner. All school principals are requested to adhere to these guidelines,” the department said.
