AmaZulu gifted chance to avenge loss

2010-07-27 00:00

STILL reeling from the 3-0 Nedbank Cup defeat inflicted on them by Wits University, AmaZulu have been provided with a chance to avenge the May 22 loss at Soccer City.

At yesterday’s Uthukela Mayoral Cup launch in Ladysmith, AmaZulu were drawn to play the Gauteng side at noon at Settlers Park Stadium on Sunday.

The other match, which kicks off at 9 am, pits Maritzburg United against an Uthukela Invitational XI.

Speaking after the draw, Wits general manager George Mogotsi was quick to remind AmaZulu PRO Philani Mabaso of the defeat.

“I remember when speaking to Mabaso after the game, he told me that, as he was driving back home, he did not know whether he was coming or going, such was the defeat we handed them.

“We will do the same again at the weekend,” said Mogotsi to wild giggles at the conference hall.

Throwing back a jab, Mabaso boldly stated that, as the current Uthukela Mayoral Cup champions, it will be unjust for AmaZulu to lose the trophy.

“It’s pay-back time. Wits won’t know what hit them.

“They owe us and we will have to redeem ourselves against them,” said Mabaso.

He said his technical staff will use the tournament to try different combinations and assess the players’ readiness for the season.

Uthukela Mayor Mqapheli Sithole said the winners will take home R40 000, while the losers will each pocket R20 000. This excludes the R50 000 appearance fee for all the teams.

The tournament, which is in its eighth edition, has seen the emergence of players such as former Bafana Bafana midfielder Siyabonga Nkosi, Ajax Cape Town striker Diyo Sibisi and Free State Stars’ Siyabonga Mdluli.
