AmaZulu to keep coach

2011-05-14 00:00

AMAZULU coach Manqoba Mngqithi will continue to lead the club next season despite under-achieving this season.

This vote of confidence was announced by club director Graham O’Connor during yesterday’s media briefing held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

There had been speculation surrounding Mngqithi’s future with the club following uninspiring performances and subsequent exits in cup competitions. The Usuthu management yesterday moved swiftly to quell the rumours about the former school teacher’s future.

“Are we happy with how things turned out this season?,” O’Connor said. “No we are obviously not because we had targeted a top four finish and after carefully assessing our situation where we were plagued by injuries in the first round, we revived our hopes for a top eight finish.

“However we are fully behind our coach Manqoba Mngqithi because under him the team has been playing a good brand of football.”

On rumours linking Neil Tovey with a job back at the club he helped lead to two cup semi-finals and finals, O’Connor said: “No, he’s not coming back. His being seen at our training grounds had to do with a project he’s busy with and our coach Mngqithi was relaxed about it.”
