Amateur football tournament pulls crowds

2013-04-01 00:00

TEAMS taking part in the 40th annual Padsa Easter Tournament at the Northdale Stadium were yesterday described as “crowd pullers”.

Since the country’s biggest amateur football tournament kicked off on Friday, 10 000 people have passed through the gates to see the teams.

“It’s gone very well. It’s been trouble-free, and the quality of football has been good,” said Padsa vice president Cass Badat.

He said teams like Woodlands FC, Celtic and Jacks United were the crowd-pullers at the event.

When The Witness arrived at the stadium, the majority of the crowd gathered were shouting their support at the top of their voices for Woodlands in their game against Young Manchester.

Badat described the tournament as “colourful”, and hoped that some of the players could go on to ply their trade at a higher level.

“There is a lot of talent here. In a few years’ time, these kids will be tops … There are definitely some players that could go on to play for Bafana Bafana someday,” he said.

Today will be the last day of the tournament.

Badat said the winners of the Group 1 Seniors would receive R25 000, gold medals and kits sponsored by the Department of Sport and Recreation, while the runners-up would get R12 500, plus medals.
