A BUSINESSMAN narrowly escaped death after he was ambushed by unknown men on the Mpolweni dirt road in Wartburg yesterday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed the incident.

“We can confirm the incident that occurred today along Mpolweni dirt road at about 1.15 pm where a 58-year-old businessman was shot and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Naicker.

Police said Rajen Maharaj, the owner of Phumalanga tea room, was with his 25-year-old male assistant and a four-year-old boy.

Police said the businessman sustained a gunshot wound to his back.

The suspects wore balaclavas and fled into the bush.

“His assistant escaped unharmed on foot during the robbery and a four-year-old boy was found sitting inside the car with no injuries by the police who responded to the incident,” said Naicker.

The businessman is in a stable condition in hospital. Naicker said no arrest has been made.
