An agricultural school, an artist and an auction

2013-06-04 00:00

A SPUR-OF-THE-MOMENT auction of a painting, created by tractor artist Manie Botha, raised R3 600 for Weston Agricultural College in Mooi River.

The painting was bought by Shaun de Jager from Dundee.

Botha, who had a stand at the Sheep and Wool Expo during the Royal Agricultural Show in Pietermaritzburg, said he has a soft spot for teachers as his parents and his wife are both in the profession.

“Schools always need a cent or two, and since my work is related to the agricultural community, I thought it was fitting,” the Pretoria-based painter said.

Paul Tait, principal of Weston, described the donation as “very generous”, especially as it had come from someone who isn’t associated with the school in any way.

“It’s a wonderful painting and we are very grateful,” he added.

Botha, who has been painting since 2009, is best known for his agricultral scenes, but he also does commissions for people on request.
