An impossible birdie three?

2011-11-10 00:00

THIS actually happened during the Monthly Mug at Maritzburg Golf Club.

It was an unusually cold July day after a week of unseasonal rain.

A three-ball group, let’s call them Sam, Fred and Harry, were playing a par four hole when Harry hit his second shot into the stream in front of the green.

They could see his ball, but it was difficult to reach because it was deep after the recent rain and they didn’t have a ball retriever between them.

Sam had a ping putter though, one of those that you can pick up the golf ball with the back of the putter and even though it wasn’t his ball, Sam was determined to get the ball out of the water.

The depth of the water was the problem but the stream was narrow at that point so he straddled the hazard with a foot on either side. After a bit of fiddling and juggling he eventually got hold of the ball.

So there Sam was — he had Harry’s golf ball in one hand and his own putter in the other with a foot on each side of the ditch.

Sam knew that he needed to transfer his weight to one side in order to climb up the bank, but his right foot slipped and in he went, sploosh…up to his waist in near freezing water.

He did have the good sense to hold onto the ball though. It needed both Fred and Harry to help haul him out of the drink. Prior to this ordeal, Sam had hit his ball onto the green for two and surprisingly holed his putt for a birdie three.

Later that evening in the club house an old member heard about Sam’s visit to the water and asked him what he scored on that hole.

Sam told him that he made a birdie three to which the old member said, “That’s impossible. How can you make a birdie when you had two balls in the water?”

From the 19th hole:

My wife asked me: “On your way home from work, can you go to the shops for me and buy one carton of milk and if they have eggs, get six.”

When I arrived home with my six cartons of milk, my wife asked: “Why the heck did you buy six cartons of milk?” I replied: “They had no eggs.”
