An impressive talent

2013-09-17 00:00

ALTHOUGH a quiet lad, Keanan Baker lets his spirit run free in the sports arena where his natural ability kicks in and he locks into a different world.

Originally from the Cape, he excelled at primary school, winning Sportsman of the Year for two years. It was here he discovered his passion for rugby, starting as early as Grade 1. Despite the odd bloody nose from the scrum, he enjoyed the challenge, being part of a team and knowing he was contributing to his side’s success.

He played club rugby at Pinetown Raiders and it was here he gained selection last year to the DRSU (Durban Rugby Sub-Union) team to play the Bulls and Cheetahs in Johannesburg.

“We won gold at the tournament and I played wing, although I play flyhalf for my school’s first team,” said Keanan. “It was a great experience muscling up to players from other provinces and gave an indication of how competitive and tough rugby is.”

Keanan also shines at touch rugby, making the KZN side in his age group, but his real talent lies in athletics, particularly discus.

“It’s something I decided to work on and have reaped the rewards,” he said. “At the KwaZulu-Natal trials in Durban, I was the top thrower and was chosen for the International Sports Olympiad in Lucknow, India, from October 18 to 31. This is huge for me as it will be my first time overseas, and competing against the best in the world is mind-boggling.”

It’s no surprise that Keanan has stopped playing club rugby, as he is so involved in other sports at school.

“I play first team cricket where I bowl spin, hockey and waterpolo. I also enjoy the 400 m, which I participated in at the Padssa [Pinetown and Districts School Sports Association] trials,” he said.

Having played in his school’s first teams on numerous occasions, Keanan proudly wears scrolls for cricket, waterpolo, athletics and hockey.

He may be quiet in the classroom, but he stands tall on the sporting front.
