Andrew Hudson named national convenor of selectors

ANDREW Hudson, former South African opening batsman, has been appointed by Cricket South Africa (CSA) as the new national convenor of selectors.

This was announced yesterday by CEO, Gerald Majola, who steps down as interim convenor.

“CSA is very pleased that Andrew Hudson has accepted the job because he has all the attributes to make an outstanding convenor of selectors,” Majola said.

“He has played the game successfully at the highest levels, representing the Dolphins and Proteas with distinction.

“He has also served on CSA’s franchise review committee and has chaired the cricket committee, where he has done invaluable work.

“Andrew also fully understands and supports the vision of CSA and brings to the panel’s table an outstanding pedigree in cricket and managerial acumen.

Hudson said: “I am looking forward to getting involved with the Proteas again. They have done well recently and I am confident that we also have the emerging talent to take our team forward.”

Majola outlined the background to the new format for the composition of the national selection panel.

“CSA board of directors took the decision on February 19, 2010, that the national selection panel should comprise a full-time convenor, the national coach and the national high-performance manager. The national captain will be included in the selection of the final XI.

“An interim panel was appointed comprising Corrie van Zyl, Kepler Wessels and myself as convenor, in order to give me time to head-hunt suitable candidates to comprise the panel as defined by the board.

“I set my sights on Andrew Hudson as convenor because he fits the profile of the position and my recommendation as such was approved by the board.

“Andrew has now indicated that he is in a position to take up CSA’s offer and can start on June 1, 2010, which has opened the way for the board to appoint the panel in terms of its original definition, with the interim panel falling away.

“The national selection panel will comprise, from June 1, 2010: Andrew Hudson (convenor); Corrie van Zyl (representing the national coach’s post); and Shafiek Abrahams (representing the high-performance manager’s post); with Graeme Smith (representing the captain’s post) as a selector for the final XI.

“Kepler Wessels, who was also appointed to the panel on an interim basis along with me, will continue to be the Proteas’ batting consultant and will also be available to offer selection advice to Andrew Hudson and coach Corrie van Zyl,” said Majola.
