Angry bees sting crash victims

2011-05-06 00:00

OCCUPANTS of two vehicles inured during a collision were stung by a swarm of bees disturbed by the crash.

A Honeydew Dairy milk tanker was travelling on the R56 when it collided with a double-cab bakkie at the Richmond turn-off at about 8.30 am.

Both vehicles hit a pole, which was next to a bees’ nest.

“The victims sustained minor injuries, but angry bees reacted by stinging them.

I believe that even the police who attended to the accident were stung,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said that when paramedics arrived the bees had already moved away from the accident scene.

“Not only did the patients on the scene sustain injuries in the accident, they were also surrounded and stung by the swarm of angry bees. Fortunately, as ER24 paramedics from the Pietermaritzburg branch arrived at the scene, the bees had moved on and the patients could be properly assessed.”
