Another DA star set to leave Parliament

2014-05-15 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Another of the DA’s brightest stars is set to leave Parliament.

DA MP Tim Harris yesterday announced he will move to the Cape Town city council.

The DA’s spokesperson on finance has been appointed as head of investments in the office of the mayor, Patricia de Lille.

His announcement comes barely three days after DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko announced her resignation to go and study at Harvard University in the U.S.

Harris and Mazibuko had close ties in Parliament.

He denied there was a link between his move to the Cape Town city council and Mazibuko’s resignation.

“I have in the past six months been in talks with the premier and the mayor on this issue. My move and Lindiwe’s resignation have nothing to do with each other,” he said.

He praised Mazibuko as a tough opponent for President Jacob Zuma in Parliament.

Lecturer in political sciences at the University of Western Cape, Kenny Bafo, believes the timing of Harris’s departure is dubious. He speculated that the DA wants to strengthen its caucus at municipal level, adding the cracks in the party’s leadership are now visible after Mazibuko’s resignation was made public. He said provincial leader Dr Ivan Meyer could become the Western Cape’s premier in Helen Zille’s stead.
