Another speedy arrest after PMB murder

2007-11-20 00:00

POLICE have once again made a swift breakthrough, arresting a suspect in a Thursday murder at the weekend.

The suspect was arrested in connection with the stabbing attack on Allistair “Coopie” (67) and Joan (64) de Lange last Thursday.

This is the third swift arrest in a high-profile murder case in the last month.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said Pietermaritzburg detectives arrested a 25-year-old man in the city in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The De Langes were attacked in their flat in Langalibalele (Longmarket) Street. Coopie de Lange was killed and Joan seriously injured.

She was treated in hospital and has since been discharged.

Budhram said a further arrest is expected.

Last week, a week after the murders of Siggi and Ingrid Schädle, owners of the Wartburger Hof Hotel, police arrested three suspects, who appeared in court yesterday.

Also last week, two men pleaded guilty and were sentenced to two life sentences each for the murders of Elaine Anderson and Patricia Kippen in Woodlands in October. The men were sentenced exactly a month after the murders.

Commenting on the arrests, Budhram said: “Intensive investigation, commitment of members … and the assistance from our community … is contributing to the recent successes”.

Budhram urged the community to come forward with whatever information they have on crimes. “No matter how insignificant they may regard it as, it should be provided to police,” he said.
