Another week of fine rugby

2013-06-29 00:00

BEGINNING on Monday is the U16 Grant Khomo Week in Vanderbijlpark and the Academy Week for U18 youngsters, who missed out on Craven Week. The latter will be in Durban, hosted by Glenwood.

There are 20 teams at the Grant Khomo Week, hosted by the Valke. To comply with the quota system, each squad of 22 players from the South African regions, with the possible exception of Border Country Districts, must have at least 11 players from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition, there must be at least eight players from the disadvantaged group on the field of play throughout the game. This makes it quite a headache for the coach particularly when injuries occur. This also means that the traditionally strong provinces are no longer as strong as they would normally be. The first match for KZN is against Limpopo Blue Bulls.

Kenya have withdrawn from the U18 Academy Week due to financial constraints and they will be replaced by a KZN Academy B side. It will likely consist of those players who missed out on selection after the U18 trials. Since it has not been announced at the time of going to press, some of the youngsters are probably away on holiday and not available.

KZN thus has three sides at the Academy Week, as the KZN Country Districts side are also part of the week. The KZN Academy A will play the main game on Monday against the Leopards, with the B team playing Griquas Country Districts. KZN Country Districts are )due to play Pumas CD.

Matches for the second day (Tuesday) at both weeks will be decided on the results on the first day in order to have sides of comparable strengths against one another. Wednesday is a rest day and the third and final games are on Thursday.
