Answers on palazzolo's passport today

2012-04-05 00:00

CAPE TOWN — The Department of Internal Affairs will shed more light on allegations that alleged Italian Mafia boss, Vito Palazzolo, attempted to enter Thailand with a South African passport.

Manusha Pillay, spokesperson for the department, said a press conference is planned on to answer the query.

They will then be able to answer whether Palazzolo did in fact use a South African passport and if so, whether it was a fake passport.

Meanwhile the South African embassy in Thailand has confirmed that it was Palazzolo.

Velelo Kwepile, counsellor political for the South African embassy in Thailand, yesterday confirmed Palazzolo’s identity to The Witness sister paper, Die Burger and said staff visited Palazzolo on Tuesday, reports Maygene de Wee.

Palazzolo was arrested during the weekend in Bangkok, Thailand, when he reportedly attempted to enter the country using an SA passport.

The Italian-born Palazzolo fled from Switzerland to South Africa in the 1980s, using a fake passport. He has been fighting his deportation by South Africa to Italy for years. Palazzolo faces a nine-year jail terms in Italy after he was found guilty in absentia for Mafia activities.
