Apology: councillors do not have bodyguards

2009-02-15 00:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality executive committee (Exco) has pointed out that the thrust of Friday’s article on overtime cuts at the municipality was incorrect.

Municipal manager Rob Haswell told the committee that one of the cost-cutting measures would be the withdrawal of traffic and security personnel for private functions. These would include functions such as music events where the organisers will have to foot the bill.

The reporter who covered the meeting, and who was doing so for the first time, interpreted this as cutting down on security guards for councillors who attend private functions. The report incorrectly stated that councillors will have to provide their own security when attending private functions.

Irate councillors said they do not have bodyguards, only the mayor and deputy mayor have bodyguards.

The councillors said the article caused them great embarrassment and they are being constantly confronted by the public over the issue.

The Witness apologises unreservedly to the councillors, to municipal manager Rob Haswell, who was incorrectly quoted, and to Exco member Themba Zungu, whose surname was incorrectly given as Zuma.
