Apology to councillor for twisted facts

2014-07-22 00:00

THE Witness apologises to councillor Naleni Atwaru for causing her unnecessary harm in the article “Residents’ complaints about church noise fuel heated debate at Executive Committee meeting”, published on June 20, 2014.

Atwaru lodged a complaint about the article with Press Ombudsman Johan Retief, saying that her remarks in the story were taken out of context and portrayed as sensationalist, and that the story was factually inaccurate on several counts.

Retief said The Witness had not balanced out a statement Atwaru had made about churches that should not be allowed to pop up everywhere with her repeated statements about her neutrality in the matter.

The Press Ombudsman dismissed several other complaints Atwaru made about the article, including that The Witness was biased and selective in its reporting, and that the paper had racialised the issue.
