App allows voters to directly question Parliament

2013-06-11 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Voters will soon be able to question Parliament directly using an application designed for smart phones.

A statement from Parliament reads that the app was developed because most South Africans access the Internet through their cellphones.

The mobi site gives users information about Parliament and is a way to send direct questions to the institution.

Pending their broadband availability, users can connect to Parliament using Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.

The statement said few South Africans could access the Internet using tablets, desktop or laptop computers. A study in December last year — “Internet Access in South Africa 2012” by World Wide Worx (WWW), and backed by the Howzit MSN online portal — noted that mobile broadband subscriptions outnumbered fixed-line broadband subscriptions eight to one in SA.

The MD of WWW, Arthur Goldstuck, had commented that the Internet had “finally awoken fully” in SA, with almost eight million South Africans sometimes or regularly accessing the Internet on their phones, and a penetration rate reaching 20%.
