Appeal by rapist postponed

2013-08-09 00:00

AN appeal by convicted serial rapist Faizel Sayed, the killer of a nine-year-old Howick schoolgirl, was postponed in the high court here this week until July 30 next year.

Sayed was found guilty — among multiple other offences — of the kidnapping, rape and murder of Nombuso Nhlangulela at Howick in February 2008.

He was handed six life sentences plus jail terms totalling 85 years, by acting high court judge Ben van Heerden in December 2010.

Sayed — who is in custody — made a brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg high court on Wednesday under guard by Correctional Services officials.

His appeal against his multiple convictions was scheduled to be heard by a full bench consisting of three judges.

However, the appeal was postponed to July 30 next year by agreement after the court was told that Sayed’s recently appointed advocate had not had enough time to study the voluminous court record of the case and prepare for the appeal.

Sayed was found guilty of kidnapping, raping and murdering Nombuso, in addition to a string of other kidnapping, rapes and robberies with aggravating circumstances perpetrated on eight other teenagers and young women in 2008.

Sayed’s crime spree spanned some five months from February to June 2008, when he was arrested as a result of being spotted “by chance” in the street by one of his victims.

All the victims were assaulted in a forested area near Liberty Midlands Mall after being lured by Sayed with offers of jobs.

Two victims were abducted and forced into vehicles driven by unknown accomplices of Sayed. After being dropped off they were forced to accompany Sayed into a forest and were violently raped.

Some of Sayed’s victims were threatened with a knife.

Nombuso’s murder caused particular outrage in the Howick community. The Grade 4 pupil from Howick West Primary School disappeared on Thursday, February 28, 2008. She was last seen alive on that day at the local high school not far away, waiting for her sister.

Four days later, she was found tied to a tree in Howick village with lace curtaining.

She had been gagged with a sock stuffed in her mouth and a plastic bag was tied over her head.
