Applications for smart ID cards are now open

2014-02-04 00:00

APPLICATIONS for smart ID cards officially opened at Home Affairs in the Durban office yesterday. Premier Senzo Mchunu and eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo were the first paying applicants to officially apply for the cards.

Tersia Hanekom, Home Affairs district manager in operations, said they have tested a few cards with colleagues to ensure that the system was working.

In Pietermaritzburg, the same exercise was performed. Three provincial Home Affairs offices — Pietermaritzburg, Durban district in Dr A.B. Xuma Street and Mtubatuba in Zululand — are the only three places ready to take applications for the smart ID card.

It takes 10 working days before the applicant can receive the card. The mayor and premier each paid R140 for their applications yesterday. They were taken to the entrance where they had to register. ID photos and their fingerprints were then taken and sent through the verification process.

“We want to ensure that criminals are unable to beat this system. We link individual’s biometric details to the card so it won’t be easy to clone,” said Hanekom.

Pensioners who were born in January and February are invited to apply.

“The rest of the population will have to wait for invitations to apply for the card,” she said.
