Appoint KZN top cop on merit, urges DA

KWAZULU-NATAL is eagerly awaiting the appointment of its new police chief following Commissioner Hamilton Ngidi’s departure last month.

Calls by opposition parties for Ngidi to stay “until after the 2010 World Cup to ensure a smoother process”, were not heeded, and now Sizwe Mchunu of the KZN DA wants national Police Commissioner Bheki Cele to follow “a selection process governed by merit, competency and a keen awareness of the unique dynamics within the province”, when making the appointment.

Cele is expected to announce Ngidi’s successor on November 1. Five candidates are reportedly on the shortlist, including deputy provincial commissioner of operations Fannie Masemola, uMlazi cluster commander Commissioner Dumezweni Chiliza and Ulundi cluster commander Commissioner Mamunye Ngobeni. KZN Community Safety and Liaison department head Yasmin Bacus is also reportedly in the race.

In a statement, Mchunu said Cele should not allow politics to influence the appointment of Ngidi’s successor.

“Our primary concern now is that the procurement process and appointment of his successor remains free of any form of political interference.”

Mchunu acknowledged Ngidi’s contribution in fighting crime in the province.
