Archives to move while renovations resume

2010-09-13 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository will be moving from their current location in Pietermaritz Street from September 27.

The last day the public can use the current Reading Room in Pietermaritz Street will be September 16.

The archives will open again for the public on September 27 on the third floor of 230 Prince Alfred Street, which was the old Grey’s Hospital building and is now the home of the Provincial Library Service.

The move is due to the renovation of the building in Pietermaritz Street. In 2007 the National Archives budgeted for major renovations to the Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository.

Public Works issued a contract in April 2007 to Sharpe Building and Plumbing Services, who subcontracted electrical work, fire detection and air-conditioning to various specialist companies.

However, the work of the main contractor proved to be problematic, and the contract was terminated in December 2008.

This also resulted in the termination of the work of the specialist contractors. During this period the archival material was kept on site which proved unworkable. It was decided to move all material off site before renovations were continued by a new contractor.

The tender has now been advertised, but has yet to be awarded.

Because documents are off site they must be ordered in advance and potential archive users are advised to contact reading room staff at least five days before a visit to ensure the documents they wish to consult can be made available.

E-mail NelP@kzndac.gov.za orcall 033 342 4712. The Reading Room opening hours are from 9 am to 3 pm on weekdays and on second Saturday of the month from 8:30am to 12 noon.
