Armed suspects nabbed

2011-04-13 00:00

THREE armed suspects were arrested allegedly before they could commit a crime, thanks to tip-offs from members of the public.

Police received information that three men in a maroon VW Jetta were travelling to Port Shepstone to commit a crime.

They were in possession of an unlicensed firearm and live rounds.

Shortly after receiving the tip-off via police radio from Warrant Officer Reelen Govender, Sergeant Rudi Smit spotted the vehicle driving past him in Umtentweni.

Sergeant Stanley Holloway met up with Smit and they pulled the vehicle off the road near Rethman Drive in Umtentweni.

“The officers found the three men with a .38 revolver and rounds in the vehicle as well as four cellphones and a canister with pepper spray,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid of Port Shepstone police.

Further investigation found that the firearm belonged to the mother of one of the suspects.

Three men — Thelumusa Jengu, Nhlakanipho Jengu and Jabulani Vezi — appeared briefly in court in connection with the incident. They will remain in custody until their next court appearance.
