Arson probed in fire at documents storage warehouse

2013-10-14 00:00

STORAGE company Metrofile, whose Westmead, Pinetown, warehouse was gutted by a fire at the weekend, have set up a temporary operational office in Stockville while the investigation into the cause and the extent of the damage is established.

Police are investigating a case of arson after tons of critical documents were lost in the fire. Managing director of Metrofile Records Management Guy Kimble said the company had invoked its disaster recovery plan.

“A temporary response office has been established, and all vital computer systems have been restored and are ready for extracting the exact details of the records that were affected,” he said.

Kimble said the company was working with relevant authorities and the investigation would determine which of the clients’ records were affected.

“Those clients affected will be contacted directly,” he said.

He added that due to sheer volume, Metrofile was not required to image all archive documents kept in physical form, saying it was an optional service and those clients who opted for this service would have back-ups.

The JSE-listed company stores more than 21 billion records in the country and millions went up in smoke, the second at the facility in six years.

Some of their clients are major banks, insurance providers and a number of government departments.

A similar incident occurred at the facility in 2005, but the investigation was inconclusive.

Police said a case of arson was opened. Spokesperson Thualni Zwane said the cause of the fire was not yet known and no arrests have been made.
