Arthur and Smith win K1 Trial

2008-08-18 00:00

Michael Arthur, first home in a K1 over the same course three weeks ago, won the Alexander Caruth number two on Sunday with Jeffrey Smith to take top the slot in the KZN K2 team to the SA K2 Breede in Western Province next month.

Herman Chalupsky and Andre Pohl teamed up to take the second place a minute-and-a-half later and will be the top sub-veteran crew in the KZN team as well.

Nkosi Cele and Tom Ngcobo from Lembethe Club at Nagle Dam were a surprise in third place. Along with Shaun Griffin and Trenton Lamble they will make up the KZN B Team and be the U21 crew in the team.

In fifth pace was the interesting new combination of Mark Mulder and Len Jenkins. Jenkins is well below full fitness and he was beaten into second place by Mulder in last week’s Zig Zag Tugela 20s, but the combination has huge potential for the future.

Maritzburg College’s Matt Shaw and Blaine Berresford placed sixth overall to take the boys’ race from another Lembethe CC crew of Nhlanhla Cele and Skhumboso Ngidi. Darron Berriman and Michael Hay outsprinted Matt Gilson and Mark Summers for third place, giving College three boats in the first four.

Tiffany Kruger and Kelly Howe had no problems comfortably winning the women’s race from Abie Adie and junior partner Kate Johnson with U14s Brittany Petersen and Kerry Segal in third place.

A good field of over 260 paddlers took part in the 18 kilometre race over the customary Upper Umgeni course from Albert Falls Weir to the Baynes Drift Bridge.

The race was hosted by Umvoti Canoe Club from Greytown in cool and cloudy weather with the Umgeni at a comfortable 6,4 cumecs thanks to a controlled release from Umgeni Water.

The final KwaZulu-Natal team will be announced during the week.
