Artists bring KwaMashu’s old buildings to life ahead of wine festival Raisa Soodyal

THE once-derelict buildings on KwaMashu Hill are ready to play host to the TOPS at SPAR KwaMashu Wine and Lifestyle Festival.

Residents of KwaMashu and festival organisers got together to give their stamp of approval by placing handprints and signatures on the buildings, which will host the festival next week.

“The launch today marks the start of an incredible journey towards the transformation of KwaMashu into an inspiring hub of creativity around art, film, music and wine,” said Carol Coetzee, CEO of the KZN Film Commission.

Artists from Stoneart came together for three days to repaint and colour the buildings in spraypaint free of charge.

Leleti Khumalo, star of Sarafina, is one of the legends whose face is painted on the building.

“It doesn’t feel real having my face on that building, I grew up here and KwaMashu has changed in a good way over time and it is progressing,” said Khumalo.

Organisers Sharon Cooper and Megan Hodson handed out treats to the children in the township. “It’s been really exciting managing to get so much coverage on this event, spending time with the children and asking the artists to be here.” added Hodson.

Sonja Moller, a teacher at North Coast Primary, spent the day teaching the children how to draw on the other side of the building. “I love the children and they have helped so much,” said Moller.

“With signatures and messages of hope on the walls of the once-derelict buildings in KwaMashu, it is a signal of what is to come in the years ahead,” said Cooper.

The TOPS at SPAR KwaMashu Wine and Lifestyle Festival will take place on the evenings of July 25 and 26 at the K-CAP Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre in KwaMashu. Tickets can be purchased through Webtickets.
