Artist’s tribute gives smiles, tears to Burry’s family

2013-08-15 00:00

A CARICATURE of the late Burry Stander, made by a local artist in Waterfall, have brought a tear and a smile to the mountain biker’s family.

Burry’s dad Charles, and brother Duane, received the drawing this past Friday.

It now has place of pride at the family’s cycle shop in Waterfall. “We were very emotional when we first saw it,” Duane said yesterday. “A lot of people have been commenting on it because it is displayed so prominently.”

Burry (25) died in an accident on January 3, when he was allegedly hit by a taxi while he was cycling in Shelly Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

He was fifth in the men’s cross-country race at the 2012 London Olympics. Four years earlier, at the Beijing Games, he finished 15th in the cross-country event.

Bear Hansen, the artist, was also doing the caricature from a very emotional place, because he too shared the pain when very close friends lost children in accidents.

“I have friends who have lost sons, it was very painful. So in my own way I just wanted to give the family a little memory of a loved one, hoping to bring a small gift from a huge fan of Burry.

“I used to follow Burry’s progress all the time, he was a hero to me. Although I am a cyclist, I am not brave enough to tackle mountain-biking,” Hansen joked.

He initially asked the family to provide him with photographs of Burry, from which he drew inspiration for the caricature.

“I thought if I could just put a smile back on their faces, that would be great.”

• Culpable homicide charges against the minibus taxi driver Njabulo Nyawose have been reinstated.

The matter was due in court on August 21, the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson said.
