TO coincide with the staging of the exhibition International Textile Challenge: France, Japan and South Africa, which is in the main exhibition room at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street in Pietermaritzburg, there will be weekly film screenings on Wednesday nights.

Participants will be able to enjoy a simple meal at Café Tatham, followed by the film screening in the lecture theatre.

Tomorrow night’s film and supper evening, which starts at 6 pm, will feature City Lights, Charlie Chaplin’s last silent film, and one which contains both a touching love story and some of the most brilliant sequences of physical comedy ever committed to film, including the least heroic boxing match imaginable. Although by 1931 sound was available for film, Chaplin insisted that he didn’t need it, that cinema as a purely visual medium could create all the comedy, pathos and narrative interest that a viewer could require. Tickets are R60 and booking is essential. Phone Kobie at 033 392 2819, or e-mail kobie.venter@msunduzi.gov.za
