Ashburton heist fails

2010-08-26 00:00

A WORKER was warned to keep quiet about a farm attack or face death when two armed men barged into an office on a farm in Ashburton yesterday morning.

The woman clerical worker said one of the attackers seemed familier to her, although she could not recall where she knew him from.

The 22-year-old worker said the men came to Highway Goat Farm at about 9.30 am. She said one man was armed with a pistol.

“They pointed a gun at me and demanded that I hand them cash. I told them that my boss had just taken the money to a bank,” she said.

The men then asked her when her employer was likely to return to the farm. She told them he was probably on his way back.

“They warned me never to tell my boss or police about what happened. They also demanded to know how far away other farm employees were, and I told them that they were just behind the office, and they ran away,” she said.

She estimated the men to be in their late 20s. She said she reported the matter to her boss, who then called the police.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said air wing and dog units tried unsuccessful to trace the suspects, who apparently ran towards the N3.
