DECOMPOSED human remains found in a river in Ashdown on Friday afternoon have yet to be identified as an investigation into the discovery continues.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the body of man, believed to be in his thirties, was discovered in Mpumuza Stream in Shayamoya by a woman who was looking for her dog, which was lost on New Year’s Eve.

“While she was passing the stream, she detected a horrible smell and saw the decomposed body. The deceased is unknown,” Zwane said.

A resident at the scene, Thobelani Magwaza, said it was believed the man was robbed and thrown into the stream.

“The pockets of his clothes were all out. The stench was overwhelming and the community could not identify him because he had been so badly decomposed,” Magwaza said.

He said previously a body of a young boy was found in the bush near the stream. He said the community want the bush to be cut.

Zwane said an inquest docket was opened at the Plessislaer police station and an investigation is under way.

Meanwhile, a body was found by a fisherman floating in the Duzi River near Camps Drift yesterday morning.

Zwane said the body had not been identified.
