Ashley cement their spot on top

2014-07-10 00:00

ASHLEY Plantimex extended their lead at the top of the PFA Over-35 League with a 2-0 win against Hillary, at Ashley, last week.

Unbeaten to date this season and turning their home ground into an impregnable fortress, Ashley took the points thanks to a double strike from Hayden Vincent — the team’s top scorer who took his goal tally for the season to eight.

Played at a fast pace, Ashley were guilty of giving the ball away too often, trying to be fancy instead of doing the basics and playing simple football. This allowed Hillary to make a game of it, but they could not break through Ashley’s stern defence.

Torsten Fehenfeld and Alexi Vassilatos were dangerous down the flanks and were close to scoring on numerous occasions. The the deadlock was broken by one such run when Fehenfeld’s cross from the right allowed Vincent to put the ball away and open the scoring.

Making the turn 1-0 ahead, Ashley doubled their lead when a great solo effort by Vincent resulted in his shot rocketing into the net for what proved the final strike of the match.

Ashley could have gone further ahead when Karl Smith and Vassilatos shot over the bar but the two-goal advantage proved enough to take the points.

Vincent was man of the match.

Next up for Ashley Plantimex is an encounter against fellow clubmates Ashley Dimalinx and although the latter is second last on the log, this is not a match to be taken lightly.

In other fixtures last week, Savages beat New Germany Old Boys 4-0, Highway United beat Ashley Dimalinx 2-0, FC Burrough did Ashley Plantimex a favour by beating nearest challengers on the log Brettonwood Old Boys (BOB) 2-1, while PMB Blues had a bye.

Ashley Plantimex top the log with 26 points from their 10 matches, with BOB’s loss seeing them fall back to 22 points. Hillary are bottom with three points, with Ashley Dimalinx above them on six points.
