At last: United say they’re staying in PMB

2014-06-25 00:00

MARITZBURG United will play the 2014/15 PSL season, which gets underway in August, based in the city and at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

The future of the club was uncertain after a second offer in three years had come from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in an attempt to lure the club to Port Elizabeth, but chairperson Farouk Kadodia and his board of directors have opted against the move and have pledged their long-term future to PMB.

“There were many reasons that persuaded the chairman and his partners to stay,” Maritzburg’s director of communications Brian Khoza told The Witness yesterday. “The club has its roots in the city and over the last season it created a lot of interest among the people of the community.”

The fact that the club’s directors were all successful PMB-based businessmen also made the decision to stay easier, said Khoza.

“They [the directors] are passionate about the city and how the football club contributes to the economic growth of the city,” he said.

The offer from PE was a reported R36 million, three-year deal that would essentially see the Team of Choice sign a lifelong lease at the 2010 World Cup stadium.

Newly promoted Chippa United, who were also approached by Port Elizabeth, are expected to announce this week that they have accepted an offer to relocate to NMB. The club stated yesterday that they would be leaving Cape Town in the new season.
