At least five people killed in accidents across province

AT least five people were killed in different accidents across KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.

On the N3, one person was killed when a truck overturned on the southbound lane near Apple Bend. And on the N2 near Umkomaas, a cyclist was knocked down and killed by a mini-bus. In Nhlavini, a pedestrian was knocked over by a light motor vehicle.

On Friday, KZN Emergency Medical Services team attended to a fatal accident on the R56, between Ixopo and Richmond just after 5 pm.

Agiza Hlongwane from the Department of Health said when paramedics arrived on the scene, they found that two occupants of an overturned mini-bus taxi had died because of their injuries. Five other people, three who were critically injured, required urgent medical attention.

He said the paramedics stabilised the patients and transported them to Christ the King hospital in Ixopo.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

“It is alleged that a taxi was involved in an accident and caught fire. Two people were confirmed dead at the scene and one died at the hospital,” he said. — Witness Reporter.
