Athletics continues this term

2010-08-03 00:00

THERE is still some interest in athletics this quarter and hopefully more schools in the future will get involved. The third term is congested with football, sevens rugby, some athletics and cricket, which will be starting a little earlier this year.

The Pietermaritzburg and District athletics meeting that has been held at Howick High School over the last number of years will continue, but this year there have been a few meetings involving interschool competition that have been reinstituted.

The three independent schools, Hilton, Michaelhouse and Kearsney, have a triangular annually. On Saturday a meeting involving host team Michaelhouse, St Charles, Maritzburg College and Westville took place. Next Saturday, St Charles will be hosting a similar meeting.

At Michaelhouse, the teams in five age groups, with about 200 athletes, participated over a limited number of events but there were some good performances. Trophies were presented to the best performance in four disciplines. The performances were rated on the Absa scales.

In the sprints J. Hugo from Hilton was awarded the trophy for running the U16 100 metres in 11,5 seconds. The middle distance award went to G. Jooste from Michaelhouse who was timed at two minutes and 19,8 secs for the U15 800 metres. The trophy for the jumps was won by D. Martin from Westville for jumping 1,75 metres in the U16 high jump. A second Westville athlete won the trophy for the throws when he won the shot put with a heave of 14,65 metres in the U15 age group.

Points were not awarded but it was Westville that achieved the best results in both the U14 and 15 age groups. In the U16, Hilton did marginally better than Westville. Michaelhouse took the U17 by quite a margin, with Hilton having the best performances in the U19 section.
