Atm scam at garage cost pmb man R5 000

2011-08-16 00:00

HAVING your money withdrawn without your consent is a harrowing experience. Ask Pietermarizburg resident Duncan Guy, who had over R5 000 withdrawn from his account.

Last Friday Guy was travelling from King Shaka International Airport when he stopped at a garage to withdraw money.

“A tall man approached me and said I should not use the ATM because cards were not fitting into the card slot. I thanked him and quickly made my transaction without any problems,” said Guy.

He became suspicious the following day when he tried to withdraw money and was told that he had exceeded his daily limit. He checked online and found transactions the had not made. His bank, Absa, is investigating.

Absa’s Paul Mathias said a decision to refund is based on the merits of the individual case. The client will need to show all the transactions not known and submit them with an affidavit to the bank.
