Attack: Farmer held up

2010-11-17 00:00

A LIDGETTON farmer narrowly escaped death after he was held up, tortured and robbed by three armed men at his home at the weekend.

Graham Taute (47), who runs a pottery farm in the area, was awoken on Saturday night when his dogs began barking, according to the police.

The dogs were inside the house. He got up to let them out and as he opened the door he was accosted by three men. Two of them had covered their faces.

One of his dogs tried to fight off the attackers. One of them tried to stab the dog, but it ran away.

Police said the men forced Taute back inside his house where they demanded cash and a firearm. He gave them a small cash safe which held about R2 000 and said he did not own a firearm.

They dragged Taute from room to room demanding that he produce a firearm.

They tortured him by burning him with a laundry iron and fled with cash, goods and his bakkie.

Attempts to contact Taute were unsuccessful as his phone went to voicemail.

Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan confirmed that cases of attempted murder and theft of a vehicle had been opened.

Anyone who has information about the incident should contact Captain Naidoo at 033 239 9330 or 082 411 6535.
