Attempted hijacker shot

2008-06-29 00:00

A Pietermaritzburg man is under police guard in a local hospital after a botched hijacking near the intersection of Old Greytown and Bombay roads on Saturday evening.

According to Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram, the injured man had called for a metered taxi to fetch him from the Golden Horse Casino.

The man got into the front seat and as the taxi neared the intersection at the Old Greytown and Bombay roads, produced a firearm and ordered the taxi driver to stop.

“It is alleged that the taxi driver grabbed the barrel of the firearm and a scuffle then ensued between them, resulting in a shot being discharged.

“The passenger was shot and wounded on the hand. A police vehicle was in the vicinity and arrested the passenger,” said Budhram.

Budhram said the vehicle was slightly damaged after hitting an embankment, but the taxi driver did not sustain any injuries.

Investigations are continuing.
