Attention turns to Inland 20/20 series

CLUB cricket attention turns to the KFC Inland 20/20 Series with another double-header at Varsity Oval Friday.

The Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road is host to a superb oval and pitch prepared by Dave Evans and his staff, and the top-class facility lends itself to quality cricket.

Lancashire and Orientals kick off the whirlwind action that is 20 overs per side at 4 pm with the other clash featuring Midlands against Ladysmith-based K&L just three hours later. The festive fare makes for an evening’s entertainment for the family and is well worth a look.

On Sunday in the KZN Inland Premier 60 League, the match of the weekend will likely be the Midlands versus Zingari game at Eston.

Midlands need to win to keep in touch with Varsity and Standard. Their game last weekend against Young Natalians was rained off. Zingari are capable of beating any team and Midlands will have to be at their best.

Lancashire host Standard at Woodlands. Lancs have lost ground and will want to rectify this, but Standard disposed of Northern Districts in their last game quite easily.

K&L come up against bottom team Orientals at Ladysmith, while Young Natalians host Northern Districts at Khan Road.

The University of KZN enjoyed two wins during the opening days of the SA Students’ Sports Union (Sassu) Week in Stellenbosch.

Against Cape Peninsula, UKZN pulled the match out of the fire off the last ball. After UKZN had scored 193/9, Peninsula were cruising to victory needing 40 runs off 10 overs with six wickets intact.

Against Rhodes, UKZN totalled 169 with in-form KZN Inland all-rounder Ollie Humphries hitting 64.

The paceman then took four for 13 and Jethro Eustice four for 36 as Rhodes were dismissed for 130 and UKZN won by 39 runs to earn a bonus point.

The KZN Coastal Premier 45 semi-finals saw Delta beat Berea Rovers by three wickets and Crusaders beat Chatsworth United by 50 runs.

The result is that Delta will meet Crusaders in the final at Kingsmead this Sunday.
