Award: Blue light saga wins prize

2008-04-10 00:00

THE Witness’s sustained efforts to hold authorities accountable for the reckless abuse of their “blue light” privileges have been acknowledged in the country’s premier journalism awards.

Nerissa Govender, the Witness reporter who covered the story over a number of months in the face of threats and intimidation, won the “Hard News” category for her coverage of the saga at last night’s Mondi Shanduka Newspaper awards in Johannesburg. Her series of articles covered the behaviour of the motorcades of KZN Premier S’bu Ndebele and ANC president Jacob Zuma, among others.

The judges said: “Govender displayed tenacity and grittiness, staying with the issue undaunted by hostility from people in powerful positions. The stories had a strong feel of breaking news, written under the pressure of deadlines.”

Govender commented: “It was an absolute honour to receive this award. I was particularly fortunate to be entrusted with such an important story.”

From a record total of 575 entries across 10 categories, the judging panel handpicked a shortlist of some 32 finalists and 25 commended journalists.
