Award: ‘ Witness’ writer wins with article about alcohol dangers

2012-06-01 00:00

WITNESS reporter Trish Beaver has won first prize in the newspaper category of the annual Brandhouse Responsible Drinking Awards in Cape Town.

She shared the prize with Zinhle Mapumulo from the Witness’s sister publication, City Press.

Beaver’s winning article was about a manual for teachers to teach teenagers the dangers of alcohol.

“I am thrilled to win the prize,” she said.

“And I am grateful to Brandhouse for the recognition they give to this important campaign.

“I realise how important it is because teenagers are prone to peer pressure and alcohol is so available,” said Beaver.

Witness editor Angela Quintal said: “Through her writing, Trish has the knack of getting in touch with her topics and in this case it’s one that touches everyone. We are proud of her.

“Readers can expect more award-winning reporting, as we build on her solid foundation.”

Overall winner was Carte Blanche’s Kim Cloete whose winning entry was about foetal alcohol syndrome.

One of the judges, Chris Moerdyk — a veteran journalist and Maritzburg College old boy — said he was impressed by the calibre of entries and hoped to see more journalism devoted to this important topic.
