Award for aiding paper recyclers

2012-10-05 00:00

A KWAZULU-NATAL recycling project was honoured with an award at the AfriSam-SAIA awards ceremony in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Richard Dobson of Richard Dobson Architects received an award for the Enhancing Livelihoods in Cardboard Recycling project 3.

The project, which was started in 2009, helps informal cardboard recyclers by giving them equipment, such as trolleys, overalls and safety gloves, as well as access to collection-points. The project is part of a broader long-term plan of the eThekwini Municipality.

Dobson said the award was not his, but that of the recyclers. He said that architecture profession was much broader than it seemed, as it encompassed a community of practitioners and what they are contributing to a new urbanised area.

“We’re trying to lay down new aspirations about the future.”

Two rural South African schools shared top honours with projects that could change how future schools are designed.

Lebone II College’s re-instated storm water course forms a wetland feature and water management system on the campus. Vele Secondary School has been transformed from a dilapidated rural school to a facility that “embeds teaching in its natural environmental and cultural heritage”, the awards stated.
