Axe killing: Man in dock over aunt’s murder

2012-08-13 00:00

A 31-YEAR-OLD man made a brief appearance at the Himeville Magistrate’s Court last week for the murder of his aunt on August 1.

Mlungisi Dana Duma of the Mqatsheni area allegedly believed that his aunt, Beslina Duma (64), had killed his father, and decided to avenge him.

On the night of August 1, community members alerted the police after they allegedly saw Duma carrying a blood-stained axe.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Duma allegedly forced his way into the home of his aunt, who lived alone.

“It is alleged that witnesses saw the suspect entering Duma’s house with an axe in his hand. A short while later they heard the screams of a woman coming from Duma’s house.

“The witnesses also noticed the suspect fleeing the house on foot still carrying an axe,” said Zwane.

Zwane said it was not clear how Duma’s father died, and that the police were still searching for Duma’s relatives.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said in a statement: “It is indeed a poor indictment on our society that even in this month dedicated to women there is still no respect for the lives of our daughters, mothers and grandmothers.”
