Axe killing: accused wife denied bail

2011-11-16 00:00

A 44-YEAR-OLD woman from Howick West was refused bail by the Howick Magistrate’s Court yesterday for the alleged murder of her husband.

Nonhlanhla Vilakazi-Mokoena is facing a murder charge after Michael Tankiso Mokoena was killed on October 23. She was refused bail on the grounds that she concealed the evidence and may interfere with the investigation as her sister is a state witness.

The couple were at home with their two boys aged six and four when it is alleged Vilakazi killed her husband with an axe and dragged the body out of the house. She undressed him and washed the bloodied clothes.

In the early hours of Sunday, October 23, neighbours saw the body of Mokoena next to the house, notified Vilakazi and police were called.

At that time they suspected that he had been attacked by unknown people and dumped at his home, but a week later police arrested Vilakazi.

It alleged that she had asked her sister to throw the clothes and the axe in the river. The sister was not aware of what was in the parcel she was asked to discard.

The axe and clothing were recovered.

Vilakazi will be back in court on December 12.
