Axed IFP mayor: ‘All went well’

2010-12-23 00:00

THE attempted shooting of former Umtshezi Mayor Maliyakhe Shelembe did not put a damper on a Christmas function he organised yesterday. Fellow IFP outcast Zanele Magwaza-Msibi was the guest speaker at the event.

The shooting happened late on Monday night while Shelembe was returning home from a meeting to plan yesterday’s function. He was unharmed in the attack which he blamed on “internal conflict” within the party.

He said there were concerns that there could be trouble at the function which was not a political event. However, all went well. Shelembe said before becoming a mayor he was involved in community affairs, and the purpose of the year-end event, which was held in the Okhahlamba area, was to thank the community for its support. He said food parcels were distributed and meals were provided. He said he had invited Magwaza-Msibi to be the guest speaker in her personal capacity. She spoke to the community about not getting involved in violence.

Magwaza-Msibi said that during the holidays those who work in the big cities were returning to their homes in the rural areas. She implored them to use the opportunity to bond with their families. She warned parents to also make sure that their children were safe.
